2014 T651 is a 2000 series high-copper (Cu alloyed) aluminum alloy. The “T651” temper means the alloy has undergone solution heat treatment followed by stress relieving (controlled stretching / stress-relief) and artificial aging to achieve a stable condition. This process results in a material that gains high strength while reducing internal stresses; an important advantage for engineering applications requiring dimensional stability and precise tolerances.
In terms of strength, 2014 T651 is a very strong alloy. For example, its ultimate tensile strength (UTS) typically reaches about 490 MPa, while its yield strength (proof stress) is around 420 MPa. These values give 2014 T651 a much higher load-carrying capacity compared to many other aluminum alloys. This makes it suitable for structural or critical applications such as aircraft parts, defense industry components, heavy mechanical constructions, and high-load fasteners.
Regarding machinability, 2014 T651 performs well. Due to copper and other alloying elements, 2000 series aluminum alloys generally offer a good balance between hardness and strength, providing good surface finish and controlled chip breaking during machining. Many data sheets highlight 2014 alloy’s “good / very good machinability.” However, its weldability is limited. Welding can weaken the mechanical properties, so mechanical fastening, bolt/nut connections, or methods such as pressing/forging/extrusion are preferred.
Corrosion resistance of 2014 T651 is limited. Due to copper content, 2000 series alloys are more sensitive compared to 5000 or 6000 series alloys. Depending on the environment, especially in aggressive atmospheres like water, humidity, or salty conditions, surface protection is necessary. Therefore, surface treatments — anodizing, coating, painting, etc. — are commonly applied. With proper surface protection, the alloy shows sufficient durability for long-term use.
