5251 H14 aluminum alloy is a magnesium (Mg) containing alloy belonging to the 5xxx series in a strain-hardened temper condition. This alloy stands out with its good corrosion resistance, moderate strength, and high surface quality. It is resistant to seawater, humid atmospheres, and mild chemical environments. Therefore, it can be safely used in both indoor and outdoor applications. Compared to pure aluminum, it offers higher strength while maintaining very good formability.
In terms of strength, 5251 H14 provides higher strength than the O temper, but lower than H16 and H32 tempers. Compared to 5052 H32 alloy, it offers lower strength but similar corrosion resistance. When compared to 5083 alloy, it provides lower strength but better formability. Compared to 6061-T6 alloy, it has lower strength but significantly better corrosion resistance and surface performance.
In terms of machinability, 5251 H14 alloy is moderate; it is not ideal for machining but can be easily processed in sheet and plate form. Its bending capability is quite good and it can be formed with low risk of cracking. This temper provides a good balance between ductility and strength. It is highly suitable for cold forming processes.
In terms of coating capability, 5251 H14 performs very well and is suitable for surface treatments such as painting and anodizing. It is preferred in decorative applications due to its high surface quality. In terms of vibration response, it offers good energy damping capacity and can be used in environments with dynamic loads.
Its weldability is very high and it can be easily welded using methods such as MIG and TIG. Its performance after welding generally remains good. The 5251 H14 alloy is widely used in applications such as decorative panels, automotive parts, structural components, household appliances, and light structural applications. It stands out especially in applications requiring surface quality, corrosion resistance, and good formability.
