The 6063 T6 aluminum alloy is an Al-Mg-Si series alloy with excellent extrusion capability and is widely used in architectural applications. It stands out with its high corrosion resistance, providing long-lasting performance especially in atmospheric environments. Although it is not as resistant as 5083 in marine conditions, it performs significantly better than copper-containing alloys such as 2024. This makes it ideal for façade systems, window, and door profiles.
In terms of strength, 6063 T6 offers lower strength compared to 6061-T6, but provides superior surface quality and aesthetics. Its typical tensile strength is around 240 MPa,
which is significantly lower than high-strength alloys like 7075-T6. However, this is balanced by better formability and lower internal stresses, making it suitable for complex extruded profiles.
Regarding machinability and bending properties, 6063 T6 offers moderate performance. Its bendability is limited in T6 temper, but it provides higher strength compared to T4. While 6061 offers better machinability, 6063 provides superior surface finish, making it advantageous for decorative and precision applications.
Coating capability (anodizing performance) is one of the strongest features of 6063. Its homogeneous microstructure allows for an excellent
anodized surface finish. This gives it an advantage over alloys like 6061 and 6082. Additionally, its vibration damping is moderate and better than harder alloys like 2024.
In terms of weldability, 6063 performs very well and can be easily welded using TIG and MIG methods. This makes it highly attractive for structural and architectural uses. It is widely used in automotive, construction, furniture, and energy sectors, especially where lightweight, aesthetics, and corrosion resistance are required.
