6262 T6 aluminum alloy belongs to the Al-Mg-Si based 6000 series and is a free-machining alloy developed for applications requiring high machinability. Elements such as lead (Pb) and bismuth (Bi) facilitate chip breaking, providing high efficiency in CNC and automatic lathe operations. The T6 temper refers to solution heat treatment and artificial aging, resulting in high strength and hardness.
In terms of corrosion resistance, 6262 T6 generally exhibits the typical characteristics of the 6000 series and performs well in atmospheric conditions. However, due to free-machining elements, its corrosion resistance is slightly lower compared to 6061 and 6082. Nevertheless, it is sufficient for most industrial environments and can be improved through anodizing and surface coatings.
Regarding strength and mechanical properties, 6262 T6 offers medium-to-high strength. It has similar mechanical properties to 6061-T6 but does not reach the strength level of 6082-T651 and is lower than 7075-T6. However, it provides a balanced combination of hardness and stability, making it suitable for precision-machined parts.
In terms of machinability, bendability, and weldability, the main advantage of 6262 T6 is its very high machinability. Chip breaking is excellent, tool life is long, and it is highly suitable for mass production. However, its weldability is limited and it is generally not preferred for welded applications. Its bending capability is low in the T6 temper, so forming operations should be performed in softer tempers. It is superior to 6061 and 6082 in machinability and significantly more advantageous than 7075 in this respect.
Regarding coating ability, vibration behavior, and applications, 6262 alloy is suitable for anodizing and coating processes, although its decorative surface quality is not as high as 6063. Its vibration damping capacity is moderate. Main application areas include automotive, defense industry, hydraulic and pneumatic fittings, bolts and screws, and precision-machined mechanical components. 6262 T6 is an ideal solution especially for applications requiring high-speed machining.
