7022 T651 aluminum alloy belongs to the Al-Zn-Mg-Cu based 7000 series and is developed for applications requiring high strength along with good mechanical stability. Similar to 7075, it provides high strength while offering a better balance of toughness and machinability in certain applications. The T651 temper refers to solution heat treatment, stress relieving, and artificial aging, improving dimensional stability.

In terms of corrosion resistance, 7022 T651 exhibits typical characteristics of the 7000 series and provides moderate corrosion resistance. Its resistance to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) is limited similar to T6 tempers and lower than T7 tempers. It behaves similarly to 7075-T6. Compared to 6000 series alloys, its corrosion resistance is lower, therefore protective coatings are recommended.

Regarding strength and mechanical properties, 7022 T651 offers very high strength and can reach levels close to 7075-T651. Compared to 7010, it provides similar strength levels while offering better machinability in some cases. It provides significantly higher strength than 2024 but has lower toughness compared to T7 tempers.

In terms of machinability, bendability, and weldability, 7022 T651 provides good machinability and is suitable for machining operations. However, its weldability is limited and it is generally not preferred for welded structures. Its bending capability is low, and forming operations are typically performed before heat treatment. It behaves similarly to alloys such as 7075 and 7010.

Regarding coating ability, vibration behavior, and applications, 7022 alloy is suitable for anodizing and protective coatings. Its decorative surface quality is limited. Its vibration damping capacity is low. Main application areas include aerospace industry, defense applications, high-strength machine components, and load-bearing structural elements. 7022 T651 is preferred for critical applications requiring high strength and stability.
