7040 T7451 aluminum alloy belongs to the Al-Zn-Mg-Cu based 7000 series and is developed for applications requiring high strength along with improved toughness and resistance to stress corrosion cracking (SCC). Similar to 7010 and 7050 alloys, it is widely used in aerospace applications. The T7451 temper includes solution heat treatment, stress relieving, and controlled overaging, providing a balanced combination of strength and corrosion resistance.
In terms of corrosion resistance, 7040 T7451 offers high performance within the 7000 series. Its SCC resistance is significantly higher than that of 7075-T6 and benefits from T7 temper characteristics. It provides SCC resistance comparable to 7010 and 7050. However, its general corrosion resistance is lower than that of 6000 series alloys, therefore protective coatings are recommended in aggressive environments.
Regarding strength and mechanical properties, 7040 T7451 offers very high strength, reaching levels close to 7075. Although there is a slight reduction in strength compared to T6 tempers, toughness, crack propagation resistance, and damage tolerance are significantly improved. Compared to 2024, it provides both higher strength and better structural reliability.
In terms of machinability, bendability, and weldability, 7040 T7451 provides moderate machinability. Machining is possible but not as easy as with 6000 series alloys. Its weldability is limited and it is generally not preferred for welded structures. Its bending capability is low, and forming operations are typically performed before heat treatment. It is commonly used in forged and machined components.
Regarding coating ability, vibration behavior, and applications, 7040 alloy is suitable for anodizing and protective coatings. Its decorative surface quality is limited, but performance can be enhanced with functional coatings. Its vibration damping capacity is low. Main application areas include aerospace industry, military applications, high load-bearing structural parts, and aircraft structural components. 7040 T7451 is an ideal alloy for critical applications requiring high strength, improved toughness, and SCC resistance.
