The 2124 T851 aluminum alloy is an Al-Cu (aluminum-copper) alloy developed for applications requiring high strength, and it is widely used especially in the aerospace and defense industries. This alloy is considered an improved version of the 2024 alloy and offers optimized mechanical properties with higher purity. The T851 temper includes solution heat treatment followed by stress relieving and artificial aging processes, which enhance both dimensional stability and mechanical performance of the alloy.
In terms of corrosion resistance, the 2124 T851 alloy shows lower performance compared to pure aluminum alloys, but this disadvantage can be significantly reduced with appropriate surface treatments and coatings. Particularly, anodizing and alclad coating methods improve the alloy’s resistance against environmental effects. Compared to 7075 alloy, it exhibits similar corrosion behavior, while it has lower natural corrosion resistance than 6061 alloy. However, due to its mechanical superiority, this is often considered an acceptable trade-off.
In terms of strength properties, 2124 T851 stands out with high yield and tensile strength, offering a more stable and homogeneous structure compared to the 2024 alloy. Being developed especially for thick-section components makes it preferable in load-bearing structural parts. Although 7075 alloy provides higher strength values, 2124 alloy stands out with better toughness and crack propagation resistance. Therefore, it ensures balanced performance in critical safety components.
In terms of machinability, the 2124 T851 alloy delivers very good results and exhibits stable performance in machining processes. However, its bending capability is limited, and due to its high strength, forming processes are generally carried out in the annealed condition. Its weldability is low, and mechanical fastening methods are usually preferred. On the other hand, it performs very well in vibration damping and fatigue resistance, making it advantageous in applications involving dynamic loads.
The 2124 T851 alloy is widely used in aerospace, defense, space, and high-performance engineering applications. It is preferred in aircraft wing structures, fuselage components, fasteners, and parts operating under high stress. Compared to 2014 and 7050 alloys, the 2124 alloy offers a better balance of machinability and toughness. Thanks to these properties, it has gained an important place in critical applications requiring both performance and reliability.
