5086 O aluminum alloy is a magnesium (Mg) containing alloy belonging to the 5xxx series in a fully annealed condition. This temper is applied to provide maximum ductility and formability. The alloy stands out particularly with its superior corrosion resistance in marine environments and shows high resistance to saltwater. It provides long-term performance in humid atmospheres, chemical environments, and industrial conditions. Compared to pure aluminum, it offers higher strength while being highly advantageous in terms of formability.

In terms of strength, 5086 O has lower strength compared to tempers such as H111 or H112, but this provides an advantage in ductility and formability. Compared to 5052 O alloy, it shows similar ductility while offering higher strength. When compared to 5083 O alloy, it provides lower strength but easier formability. Compared to 6061-T6 alloy, it has much lower strength but significantly superior corrosion resistance and bendability.

In terms of machinability, 5086 O alloy is moderate; it is not very suitable for machining, but it can be easily processed in sheet and plate form. Its bending capability is close to excellent and the risk of cracking is very low. Therefore, it is preferred in deep drawing, complex forming, and precise bending operations. It is one of the most suitable tempers for cold forming processes.

In terms of coating capability, 5086 O performs well, although additional coating is generally not required due to its natural corrosion resistance. However, painting, anodizing, and other surface treatments can be applied. In terms of vibration response, it offers good energy damping capacity due to its high ductility, making it advantageous in vibrating systems.

Its weldability is very high and it can be easily welded using methods such as MIG and TIG. The risk of cracking after welding is low and there is no significant loss in mechanical properties. The 5086 O alloy is widely used in applications such as shipbuilding, marine equipment, chemical tanks, pressure vessels, and structures requiring complex forming. It stands out especially in applications requiring high formability, corrosion resistance, and weldability.
