In the high-strength 7075 T6 material, stress corrosion cracking resistance is low, so increasing corrosion resistance in 7075 aluminum became a serious necessity, and 7075 T73 heat treatment - tempering was developed. T73 and especially T7351 heat treatment - tempering provides very high corrosion resistance while ensuring almost perfect machining without distortion at very tight tolerances for 7075 aluminum. For this reason, it is widely used in the aerospace industry, and since the early 2000s, major machine/mold companies, especially in the USA and Europe, have started using it. In Turkey, our company Referans Metal was the first, in 2007, to supply 7075 T73 aluminum in plate and rod form for use in the machine/mold industry. In these applications, it is very important to consider technical data during the design and drafting phase in our engineering department.
7075 T73 is a high-strength aluminum-zinc-magnesium alloy and offers a balanced performance, especially between strength and corrosion resistance. The T73 temper is designed to increase structural durability and reduce the risk of stress cracking after the alloy undergoes solution heat treatment and aging. This ensures reliable performance under long-term loads and fatigue. Although T73 has slightly lower maximum strength compared to the T6 temper, it is superior in terms of corrosion resistance and fatigue life.
In terms of strength, the 7075 T73 alloy has quite high values. Typical tensile strength is around 510–540 MPa, and yield strength is approximately 430–460 MPa. This high strength makes the alloy ideal for aircraft fuselages, helicopter parts, high-performance automotive components, and structural parts. The T73 temper also enhances fatigue resistance, ensuring long life for parts exposed to repeated loads or vibrations.
Regarding machinability, 7075 T73 is slightly more difficult to process compared to standard aluminum alloys due to its high hardness and strength. With proper cutting speeds, correct tool selection, and cooling methods during machining, operations such as milling, turning, and drilling can be successfully performed. However, its weldability is limited; mechanical fastening or special welding techniques are generally preferred. Therefore, assembly and joining methods should be carefully planned during the design phase.
In terms of corrosion resistance, the 7075 T73 alloy performs better than the T6 temper. The alloy can be used especially in open-air and mildly aggressive environments. If exposed to seawater or aggressive chemical environments, additional surface protection methods (anodizing or special coatings) can increase durability. These properties make 7075 T73 a reliable material for structural applications requiring precise engineering and long-lasting projects.
