7149-T73511 aluminum alloy belongs to the high-strength 7xxx series aluminum alloys and stands out due to its improved stress corrosion resistance provided by the T73511 temper. This alloy is primarily alloyed with zinc (Zn), magnesium (Mg), and copper (Cu). The T73511 temper is achieved through an overaging process, which enhances corrosion resistance while maintaining high strength.
In terms of corrosion resistance, 7149-T73511 exhibits excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking. Compared to 7075-T6, it provides a much safer performance in critical applications. Alloy 7050 also offers improved corrosion resistance, while 2024 performs weaker in this aspect. For marine or humid environments, it is typically used with protective surface coatings.
Regarding strength and machinability, 7149-T73511 offers high tensile and yield strength, comparable to 7075-T73. Compared to 6061, it provides significantly higher strength, although it requires more careful tooling in machining operations. It performs well in machining processes and offers good dimensional stability due to its stable microstructure.
In terms of bending properties, coatability, and weldability, this alloy has limited formability due to its high strength, and forming operations are usually performed in softer tempers. It responds well to anodizing and protective coatings. However, like most 7xxx series alloys, it has poor weldability; in this regard, 6061 is a better alternative.
Regarding vibration response and applications, 7149-T73511 is widely used in aerospace and defense industries due to its high fatigue strength and good vibration performance. It is commonly used in aircraft structural components, fittings, and high-load-bearing parts. While it shares similar applications with 7050 and 7075 alloys, it stands out in critical applications due to its improved corrosion resistance.
