5456 O aluminum alloy is a high magnesium (Mg) content alloy belonging to the 5xxx series in a fully annealed temper condition. This alloy stands out with its high corrosion resistance, good ductility, and excellent formability. Due to its annealed structure, it is very soft and suitable for complex forming operations. It shows high resistance especially to seawater, saline environments, and aggressive atmospheric conditions.

In terms of strength, 5456 O provides lower strength compared to H111, H116, and H321 tempers of the same alloy, but this increases formability. Compared to 5083 O alloy, it offers similar corrosion resistance but has potentially higher strength capacity due to its alloy composition. When compared to 5052 O alloy, it has higher strength potential. Compared to 6061-T6 alloy, it provides lower strength but significantly better corrosion resistance.

In terms of machinability, 5456 O alloy is moderate; it is not suitable for machining but can be easily processed in sheet and plate form. Its bending capability is excellent and it can be formed with very low risk of cracking. This temper is especially suitable for large forming operations and deep drawing processes.

In terms of coating capability, 5456 O performs well and is suitable for surface treatments such as painting and anodizing. It can also be preferred in decorative applications due to its high surface quality. In terms of vibration response, it offers excellent damping capacity due to its high ductility, making it advantageous under dynamic loads.

Its weldability is very high and it can be easily welded using methods such as MIG and TIG. Its performance after welding remains stable. The 5456 O alloy is used in applications such as marine structures, ship hulls, offshore equipment, cryogenic tanks, and heavy-duty forming applications. It stands out especially in applications requiring corrosion resistance, ductility, and formability.
