6066 T651 aluminum alloy is a member of the 6xxx series, based on Al-Mg-Si, developed for applications requiring high strength. The T651 temper includes solution heat treatment, stress relieving, and artificial aging processes. This results in high mechanical strength combined with good dimensional stability. It is especially preferred in aerospace, defense industries, and high-performance machinery components.
In terms of strength, 6066 T651 offers higher yield and tensile strength compared to 6061-T6 alloy. Although it does not reach the strength levels of 7075-T6, it provides better corrosion resistance and a more balanced performance. Compared to 6082-T6, it demonstrates higher strength and improved fatigue resistance. These characteristics make it reliable for load-bearing structural applications.
Regarding corrosion resistance, 6066 alloy performs better than 2xxx and 7xxx series alloys. It shows good resistance in atmospheric and humid environments. In terms of coatability, it is suitable for anodizing and other surface treatments, providing both aesthetic and protective benefits.
In terms of machinability and formability, 6066 T651 offers moderate performance. It is suitable for machining but has lower machinability compared to free-machining alloys like 2007 or 2011. Its bending capability is limited due to the T651 temper, and forming is usually performed before heat treatment. Weldability is weaker than 6061 and requires careful process control.
In terms of vibration and fatigue behavior, 6066 alloy provides high stability and durability. It performs well under dynamic loads, making it suitable for automotive, railway, and aerospace applications. It is widely used in structural components, fasteners, and parts exposed to high stress.
