5251 O aluminum alloy is a magnesium (Mg) containing alloy belonging to the 5xxx series in a fully annealed temper condition. This alloy stands out with its maximum formability, high ductility, and good corrosion resistance. Thanks to its annealed structure, it is very soft and allows the formation of complex shapes. It shows good resistance to seawater, humid atmospheres, and mild chemical environments. Compared to pure aluminum, it offers higher strength while providing the highest formability.

In terms of strength, 5251 O provides the lowest strength compared to H14, H16, and H34 tempers of the same alloy. However, this provides advantages in forming. Compared to 5052 O alloy, it offers similar ductility and corrosion resistance. When compared to 5083 alloy, it provides lower strength but significantly better formability. Compared to 6061-T6 alloy, it offers much lower strength but significantly higher formability and corrosion resistance.

In terms of machinability, 5251 O alloy is moderate; it is not very suitable for machining but can be easily processed in sheet and plate form. Its bending capability is excellent and it can be formed with very low risk of cracking. This temper is ideal especially for deep drawing, pressing, and complex forming operations. It provides the best performance in cold forming processes.

In terms of coating capability, 5251 O performs very well and is suitable for surface treatments such as painting and anodizing. It is also preferred in decorative applications due to its high surface quality. In terms of vibration response, it offers very good damping capacity due to its high ductility, making it advantageous in vibration environments.

Its weldability is very high and it can be welded easily using methods such as MIG and TIG. Its performance after welding generally remains stable. The 5251 O alloy is widely used in applications such as deep drawing parts, decorative panels, automotive interior components, kitchen equipment, and light structural applications. It stands out especially in applications requiring maximum formability, surface quality, and corrosion resistance.
