2024 T851 aluminum alloy is an Al-Cu (aluminum-copper) alloy developed for high-strength applications, widely used especially in the aerospace and defense industries. The T851 temper includes solution heat treatment, stress relieving, and artificial aging, which reduces internal stresses and improves dimensional stability. This alloy stands out with its high tensile strength and good fatigue resistance, providing reliable performance especially in structural applications.
Corrosion resistance of 2024 T851 alloy is moderate and lower compared to pure aluminum or 5xxx series alloys. Therefore, it is usually protected by surface
treatments such as alclad coating or anodizing. Compared to 6061-T6 alloy, 2024-T851 offers higher strength, while 6061 has better corrosion resistance. Compared to 7075-T6, although 7075 provides higher strength, the 2024 alloy shows a more balanced performance in terms of fatigue resistance and impact strength.
In terms of machinability, 2024 T851 alloy performs quite well and is suitable for machining operations. Its hardness allows good surface finish, but tool wear must be considered. The bending and forming capability is limited in T851 temper because the alloy is high-strength and relatively brittle. In this respect, more ductile alloys such as 5052 or 3003 are more advantageous for bending operations.
Weldability is one of the weak points of 2024 alloy. Since it tends to crack with conventional welding methods, riveting or mechanical fastening is usually preferred. However, it is highly suitable for coating and surface treatments. Its performance can be improved with painting, anodizing, and coating processes. Under vibration, this alloy exhibits stable behavior thanks to its high fatigue resistance, which is critical in aerospace applications.
Applications include aircraft fuselages, wing structures, automotive racing components, and high-performance engineering applications. Compared to 2011 alloy, 2011 offers better machinability, while 2024 provides much higher strength. While 5083 alloy stands out with superior corrosion resistance in marine applications, 2024 T851 is preferred in structural applications requiring high strength. Therefore, it is a highly efficient engineering material when used with proper environment and surface protection.
