2007 T351 aluminum alloy is a high-strength wrought alloy belonging to the Al-Cu-Mg family and is particularly preferred in applications requiring high machinability. This alloy offers high mechanical strength, excellent machining performance, and a stable microstructure. The T351 temper indicates a material that has been solution heat treated, stress relieved by stretching, and naturally aged. This treatment improves both the dimensional stability and the uniformity of mechanical properties. However, due to its relatively high copper content, its corrosion resistance is more limited compared to some other aluminum alloys.
One of the most important advantages of this alloy is its very high machinability. In machining operations, it produces short and brittle chips, which enables high productivity in automatic lathes and CNC production lines. In this respect, 2007 alloy has similar applications to highly machinable alloys such as 2011 and 6262. In contrast, 2024 alloy provides higher structural strength and fatigue resistance, while 6061 alloy offers better corrosion resistance and weldability.
In terms of strength, the 2007 T351 alloy provides medium-to-high tensile strength and yield strength. Its mechanical properties are generally higher than those of 6000 series alloys, but slightly lower than some aerospace-grade 2000 series alloys. Therefore, it is typically used not in heavy structural applications but in mechanical components, fasteners, and precision-machined parts. The material also demonstrates stable vibration response, which is beneficial in precision machinery components.
Regarding bendability and formability, the 2007 alloy shows limited performance. Due to its high strength and copper content, its cold forming capability is lower than alloys such as 6061 or 5052. However, its plating capability is quite good, and corrosion resistance can be improved through surface treatments. Its weldability is generally considered poor, and mechanical fastening methods are usually preferred in most applications.
2007 T351 aluminum alloy is widely used in sectors such as automotive, aerospace supply industry, machinery manufacturing, precision mechanical components, fasteners, and automatic lathe parts. Thanks to its high machining efficiency, stable mechanical properties, and reliable vibration behavior, it plays an important role in mass production. It offers both economic and technical advantages, especially in the production of complex and high-precision components.
